Pclix proposes us an easy way to take picture at regular interval without any change to the camera, ideally digital.

The principle is ultra simple: a single box which is able to handle the interval between each picture, from sub seconds to multiple and manage the camera through a specific cable connected to the remote control or a simple infra red led for camera without a remote control plug.
The picture above (found here) has been take with this tool and arranged by slices afterwards.
Even if the cost is relatively high (around $130), there is no easy other way to do the same thing if the camera itself is not able to handle the programming. If you like panorama or flower growth, this tool is probably a must have, I will probably try it on my own in the future.
